Myofascial Release

Myofascial refers to the connective tissues that surround and support muscles throughout the body. While these tissues are essential for proper function, they can sometimes become overly tight and cause significant discomfort. This condition is known as myofascial pain syndrome, which results from the fascia (the connective tissue) becoming tense and restricted, leading to ongoing pain and muscle stiffness.

Myofascial Release

At Windsor RMT, our therapists are skilled in treating myofascial pain by targeting specific areas of tension known as trigger points. These trigger points are often the source of discomfort, but identifying them can be difficult. To ensure effective treatment, our therapists use myofascial release techniques to address larger areas of tissue, a method also commonly used by chiropractors and other healthcare professionals.

The therapist starts by gently assessing the myofascial tissue. If the tissue feels flexible, that’s a good sign. However, if it’s tight or rigid, it indicates a problematic area. The therapist will focus on these tense spots, gradually relieving the tightness before moving on to other areas. It’s important to note that the area being treated may not always align with where the client feels pain, as muscle tension can refer discomfort to other regions of the body.

Myofascial release therapy can be particularly beneficial for those with chronic conditions. For example, it can help alleviate headaches by addressing tension in the neck and upper back. It can also improve circulation and reduce discomfort in areas such as the lower legs, where blood may pool.

While myofascial release is highly effective for many, it’s not suitable for everyone. People with conditions such as burns, open wounds, broken bones, or deep vein thrombosis should avoid this therapy. Additionally, those on blood-thinning medications should consult with their physician, as myofascial release may carry risks for certain individuals, though these risks are rare.

Although myofascial release therapy is not as widely studied as other forms of massage, many healthcare providers find it helpful for pain management. If you think myofascial release therapy could benefit you, consult with your doctor to discuss its potential as part of your treatment plan.

At Windsor RMT, we are happy to work alongside your healthcare providers to ensure the therapy is right for you. Feel free to contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation.
